Commonly used data are from the EPA’s monitoring networks. Although observed data are highly accurate, they are typically sparse. There is a need to combine multiple data sources together to obtain both the high level of accuracy of observed data along with the highest level of spatial coverage. Chemical Transport Models (CTMs) are able to provide complete spatial coverage but are subject to systematic bias and inherent variability due to model uncertainty. Multiyear studies across the United States are challenging because the bias and model performance of CTMs are not uniform over such large space/time domains. Bias changes regionally and temporally. To address this issue we introduce a model performance evaluation for PM2.5 CTMs that is regionalized. This model performance evaluation leads to a hybrid PM2.5 estimate that has the accuracy of observed data along with the coverage of modeled data. The regionalized bias correction approach is non-parametric and is therefore more flexible at characterizing performance than approaches that rely on parametric relationships of predictions errors. Observed data and bias corrected CTM data are combined using the Bayesian Maximum Entropy (BME) method of modern spatiotemporal geostatistics in order to quantify uncertainty at unmonitored locations in space and time. Previous works using Bayesian inference have been able to merge CTM and observed data in space only. This work also bypasses the typical ‘change of support’ problem that is associated with combining data sources at different scales. By incorporating a mean trend into observed data, the 10-fold cross validation mean squared error reduced by 3.91%. Incorporating modeled data along with observed data better characterizes PM2.5 variability and reduces estimation uncertainty compared with using observed data alone." @default.
