- W2908506199 abstract "ABSTRACTDevelopment of a RETRIEVE System for Ideas and Proposals of Value Engineering in Construction Project using Case-Based Reasoningby Seung-Hoon LeeSupervisor : Professor, Chang-Taek HyunFor about half a century of application of Value Engineering (VE) in the construction industry, a lot of VE studies have been performed in a large number of facilities and therefore plenty of VE proposals (VEPs) have been made and applied. VEPs are highly refined aggregated knowledge including creative and innovative ideas that were generated by multi-disciplinary experts with their respective experience, knowledge, and situational analyses. However, substantial efforts to systematically accumulate and utilize such knowledge have been insufficient in the construction industry. Moreover, although construction projects that need VE studies are rapidly increasing due to the policies of the Korean government, there are insufficient infrastructures including VE experts to satisfy those needs. The need for productivity improvement of VE study has arisen in these circumstances. From this perspective, presented in this study is RETRIEVE, the support system for idea generation and VEP development designed to improve situations or to solve problems of new case by utilizing old cases of past VE studies. RETRIEVE is developed upon the Case-Based Reasoning (CBR) methodology that is meant to solve new problems by retrieving old cases that have similar situational features with the new one. To develop RETRIEVE, the external and internal environments of VE were analyzed and the influences of those environmental features on VE objectives were identified. Those influential relations provide guidelines on the performance of old cases that the users of RETRIEVE are to retrieve. After VEPs from past VE studies had been collected and analyzed, case representation form was established, and then collected cases were indexed to build a case library that contains ideas and VEPs. In order to retrieve similar cases that correspond with the user's demands from the case library, a matching and ranking algorithm was developed. Based on the developed methodology and built case library, the RETRIEVE system was implemented utilizing Visual Basic Application (VBA) for Microsoft Excel™, and whose performance was validated using case studies with five sample cases. In this study, influential relations between VE environments and VE objectives, the classification of information or knowledge in the VEP, and their general formation were identified. This study also presented a new methodological approach that came up with a polynomial equation through the reiteration of the simple matching of the multiple comparison data for single-standard data. We also attempted taking the quantitative approach in finding the solution through a matrix. These outcomes are significant for they expand the existing body of knowledge on the VE methodology and the decision-making area both horizontally and vertically. On the other hand, RETRIEVE, which was developed in this research, mainly focused on the construction industry and is expected to contribute to improvement of value, customer’s satisfaction, and enhancement of the competitiveness of the construction industry, as it supports the idea creation and proposal development of the VE team members for VE studies, where a more efficient process than existing ones is required." @default.
