- W2909938028 abstract "Selenium (Se) is an essential micronutrient for several organisms but at elevated levels, it becomes toxic. Se toxicity is of vital concern worldwide due to its substantial similarity to sulfur (S), which readily leads to uptake and assimilation of Se by plants via sulfate transporters. Remediation of Se through transgenics is a green biotechnology occurring primarily through phytoextraction and phytovolatilization. A propitious approach for establishing an effective phytoremediation technology is the introduction of novel attributes into high biomass plants using transgenic accession. Transgenic plants involving expression of specific bacterial genes overcome the phytotoxic effects of Se. In this chapter, we focused on Se phytoremediation and explored several transgenic approaches to augment accumulation, tolerance, and volatilization of Se. The mechanism and enzymatic pathways behind Se accumulation including upregulation of genes concerned with S or Se assimilation and volatilization, selenocysteine methylation, and selenocysteine conversion to elemental Se have also been highlighted. Progress related to overexpressive genes of potentially important rate-limiting enzymes of plants involved in Se/S pathways have been elucidated. Metabolic pathways from organisms apart from plants and Se hyperaccumulators to detoxify Se compounds were also discussed. We further examined the recent advances in enhancing Se phytoremediation using microbial strains. The chapter concludes on the challenges and major research required for improving the transgenic plant technology to overcome Se contamination and to utilize Se biofortified products in agricultural sectors. The adoption of transgenics to alter plants for the metal accumulation, transport, and sequestration may expedite new vistas for enhancing the phytoremediation efficiency." @default.
