- W2911304090 abstract "In June 1869, after reading the manuscript of the Education sentimentale, Maxime Du Camp sent a long list of 251 corrections to Gustave Flaubert. Amongst the first of these corrections, Du Camp classifies the word ‘maritime’ as inappropriate to describe the journey on the river Seine, with which the novel begins. Regardless of the accuracy of Du Camp’s reprimand, Flaubert has kept this lexeme. My article tries to elucidate the significance of this obvious misalignment, arguing that, by using the term ‘maritime’ in the context of an internal focalization, Flaubert tries to unmask the bourgeois’ false perception of reality. This lexical misalignment corresponds with the – likewise erroneous – use of ‘navire’ a few lines before, referring to the small vessel. As the noun ‘navire’ must be attributed to the perception of the novel’s protagonist, Frederic Moreau, Flaubert establishes a substantial link between Frederic and the bourgeois, anticipating the end of the story: Frederic’s life as petit bourgeois." @default.
