- W2911409020 abstract "This study addressed the relationship of several factors to the utilization of computer information systems by college of education administrators. A review of literature identified several factors assumed to affect the utilization of computer information systems by university administrators for either decision-making or for technical purposes. These factors include administrative attitudes toward computers, method of computer implementation, level of computer education, perceived rewards for exemplary computer use, institution type, relationship of the administrative unit with the central data processing department, and administrative attitudes toward upper-level administrative leadership. The purpose of this study was to determine whether significant differences existed in the identification of these factors between administrators utilizing computers most often for decision-making purposes and those utilizing computers most often for technical purposes. Decision-making computer applications provide information in a format that facilitates non-routine problem solving. Decision-making applications include faculty flow models, planning packages, and student demand models. Technical usage of computers focuses on routine applications such as report generation and word processing.A questionnaire was sent to administrators of colleges of education in the Southeastern United States. There was a 72% return rate. Based on their selection of computer applications with which they were familiar, responding administrators were categorized as using computers most often for decision-making purposes or for technical purposes. More responding administrators were familiar with technical computer applications than with decision-making applications. Chi-square and t-test analyses were used to determine whether any statistically significant differences existed in the administrators' identification of the factors assumed to affect their computer utilization. No statistically significant differences were found. However, supplementary analysis resulted in two statistically significant findings. Associate deans used computers in a decision-making mode more often than deans, and there was a statistically significant difference in the perceived reward structure between the two groups. Also, administrators from universities with FTE enrollment of less than or equal to 5,000 used computers in a decision-making mode more often than administrators from larger universities, and there was a statistically significant difference in administrative attitudes toward computers between the two groups." @default.
