In the context of hand hygiene promotion, performance feedback generally means providing healthcare workers (HCWs) with their own hand hygiene compliance data. HCWs generally overestimate their own hand hygiene compliance. Hence, feedback can facilitate improvement by drawing HCWs' attention to the discordance between their perceived and actual performance. The objective of optimal hand hygiene behavior is to prevent transmission of pathogenic or resistant microorganisms between patients or from nonsterile to sterile sites within an individual patient. Control theory has been proposed as the most pertinent behavior change theory regarding performance feedback. Social psychology provides the complementary theory of ‘cognitive dissonance’. According to this theory, suboptimal hand hygiene compliance data will conflict with a HCWs perceptions of him/herself as providing high quality care." @default.
