- W2911421749 abstract "This chapter provides an overview of laboratory history and a review of the field of lab studies. It begins with a brief history of the laboratory, highlighting the varied and historically contingent nature of the relationship between the laboratory as a venue of scientific activity and experiment as an active mode of natural philosophy. It continues by describing the origins of lab studies in the late 1970s turn to practice, a move that introduced a range of new approaches to laboratory history. Finally, it argues for a newly revived lab studies to take its place at the central intersection of several lively current trends in writing the history of science. In 2008 noted laboratory historian Robert Kohler suggested the reinvention of the “microhistory of laboratory practices… as a systematic, macrosocial history of the lab.” This chapter makes a different yet complementary recommendation, positioning lab studies as the place where pedagogy, practice and material culture meet, part of the means which new scientists as well as new knowledge are forged. Considered in this way, lab studies offer new explanations of the very possibility of innovative science and its necessarily collective accomplishments." @default.
