- W2911704681 abstract "The proliferation of open source software has aroused great interest in its unique user-driven development model. The success of open source does not mean that it is a flawless model. In particular, the issue of usability improvement is becoming a significant topic that will benefit from further investigation, given the uniqueness of open source that diverges from traditional software development models. Results from prior studies do not favor a positive relationship between the existing open source model and good usability for a host of social context reasons. I contend that overcoming the lack of usability expertise within the open source community will further its competitiveness. Among several relevant methods already proposed, getting user contributors who are not usability experts involved, and especially transferring usability to them, remains to be resolved. This work is concerned with defining and establishing effective methods for improving open source usability. Based on the belief that transferring usability to non-expert open source contributors is the most difficult problem to solve, and motivated by the unique user-driven open source model, I propose an Exploratory Inspection model and developed a web-based inspection tool for assisting non-expert users in usability inspection. The new model is based on the exploratory learning method previously used to train software users through learning-by-doing. Drawing on the similarities between learning a new software system and learning unknown system usability, the exploratory inspection approach can help contributors to acquire usability through performing real usability inspection tasks. This method/tool combination emphasizes providing structured usability (i.e. Usability Patterns) during usability inspection. Furthermore, two strategies outlining knowledge and exploration freedom are proposed to further enhance the model. A research experiment involving a group of open source users and an open source project called dotproject is designed to validate the merit of exploratory inspection. Results show that this method outperforms traditional heuristics-based inspection for non-expert users in most of the effectiveness and efficiency aspects of inspection and usability learning." @default.
