- W2911732362 abstract "Ferrets, like other carnivores, are susceptible to a number of different parasites; however, clinical reports of ferrets with actual disease are surprisingly limited. This may be a result of underreporting or because domestic ferrets are often housed indoors with no exposure to most parasites. The parasites discussed in this chapter are: protozoa, helminths and arthropods. Important protozoal infections that occur naturally in ferrets include enteric coccidiosis and cryptosporidiosis, while the heartworm, Dirofilaria immitis, is the most prevalent helminth. Infestations with fleas and mites are common, especially in ferrets kept as pets in households with infested dogs or cats. Historically, ferrets have been used as animal models in parasitologic research; the most important of these roles, which all involve studies with helminths, are summarized in the chapter. Other diseases caused by parasites which are covered in the chapter are: sarcocystosis, neosporosis, giardiasis, otoacariasis, sarcoptic mange, demodicosis and myiasis." @default.
