The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of a high carbohydrate diet on structural and ultrastructural features of steroidogenic tissue, as well to evaluate adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), cortisol, and insulin levels in the blood and steroidogenic acute regulatory protein (StAR) expression in the adrenals of gerbils. In electron microscopy, the most pronounced effect of the hypercaloric diet was observed in the zona fasciculata. Plasma levels of ACTH, cortisol, and insulin also showed significant increases. However, no significant change was noted in StAR protein levels. There is evidence that high carbohydrate intake brings about remarkable morphological and functional modifications. This could ultimately lead to mitochondrial alteration and accumulation of lipid droplets, which may lead to inflammation and degeneration of adrenal cells. L’obésité est associée à plusieurs perturbations endocriniennes, y compris l’hypersensibilité de l’axe hypothalamo-hypophysaire surrénalien. Le but de la présente étude consiste à mettre en exergue les effets d’une alimentation riche en glucides sur les aspects structuraux et ultrastructuraux du tissu stéroïdien et d’évaluer les taux plasmatiques de l’ACTH, du cortisol et de l’insuline ainsi que les concentrations tissulaires surrénaliennes de la protéine StAR chez la gerbille. En microscopie électronique, les effets les plus prononcés du régime hypercalorique ont été observés dans la zone fasciculée. Des augmentations significatives des taux plasmatiques de l’ACTH, du cortisol et de l’insuline ont été enregistrées ; cependant, aucun changement significatif n’a été noté concernant les concentrations en protéines StAR. Le régime hypercalorique induit dans le tissu stéroïdien des modifications morphologiques et fonctionnelles remarquables, qui peuvent résulter d’une forte accumulation lipidique et d’une altération mitochondriale pouvant conduire à un état inflammatoire et à une dégénérescence cellulaire." @default.
