- W2912043285 abstract "This chapter discusses the three areas in which cognitive processes in animals are widely accepted and considered non-contentious. These concern processing of basic dimensions of the world shared by humans and animals. These dimensions are time, space, and number. One procedure for studying timing in animals is to study discrimination between two time durations. Most animals also travel across spatial environments and thus must keep track of their own travels. In order to remember where previously visited patches are located, the animal must use spatial memory. Research on spatial navigation in animals suggests that a variety of mechanisms are used to locate and travel to specific places. Mechanisms that are based on internally generated cues are referred to as egocentric, and mechanism that utilize cues perceived outside the organism are referred to as allocentric." @default.
