A huge variety of possible specifications of a system's quality performance is available and so a suitable choice must be made for the particular application. The chapter considers physical optical image formation with the corresponding performance data and measuring setups. One quite simple criterion used to evaluate the performance of an optical system is the wave aberration. If the image quality performance evaluation is completely switched from the spatial to the frequency domain according to the Fourier optical picture, a linear system theory approach describes the system by a transfer function. In imaging optical systems and illumination systems, the generation of the desired intensity distribution is an important criterion of performance. This is the most important property, particularly for beam-shaping systems. The measurement of the polarization properties of an optical system is based on polarimetry and ellipsometry." @default.
