- W2912090932 abstract "Climate change is forcing countries in the developing world to reexamine the viability of staple food crops for reducing food insecurity. This paper focuses on the analysis of two food crops-- maize and sorghum-- and their influence on the experience of food insecurity based on dissertation fieldwork conducted in Mtumba village, Tanzania. Cultivating maize in this semiarid region carried a higher risk due to rainfall variability and the increased frequency of droughts. In contrast, sorghum, a crop promoted by local government due to its suitability for cultivation in drier climates, was considered a lower risk crop. The research findings showed that sorghum-producing households decreased their odds of experiencing chronic food insecurity. Yet despite this finding, food-insecure, subsistence-based households expressed a strong preference to cultivate maize, appearing more likely to maximize risk and minimize subsistence security in food crop production. The research draws on economic sociology and theories of agrarian change to explain this paradox. Gender and social capital are included as distinct analytical categories in this study to examine the differential experience of food insecurity among female and male-headed households." @default.
