- W2912098180 abstract "This chapter summarizes the main alterations occurring in microbiota in HIV-infected subjects. HIV infection has been associated with reduced bacterial diversity, and with a characteristic microbial profile. The resilience mechanisms are not able to restore gut microbiota composition, and persist despite antiretroviral therapy (ART). Different ART regimens are associated with diverse profiles in gut microbiota, and not all of them are able to restore the HIV-associated dysbiosis. Changes in virome may have important implications in HIV/AIDS disease. As specific bacteria/viruses or microbiota-produced metabolites are differentially present in HIV-infected patients, they could be used as diagnostic and/or prognostic indicators of disease. Such biomarkers could also constitute reliable targets to develop different strategies to improve health. Thus probiotics, prebiotics, synbiotics, and fecal microbiota transplantations have emerged to promote structural and functional integrity in gut. Although the vast majority of the outcomes are positive, they are not conclusive, opening the door to future work." @default.
