The article is devoted to teaching skimming reading by means of the project work on the basis of the English press in the 10th form of school with advanced study of foreign languages: 1) the definition of the project work as an interactive teaching technology is given; 2) the methodological potential of the project work in the perspective of teaching skimming reading on the basis of the English press is dwelt upon; 3) the stages of teaching skimming reading using the project work on the basis of the English press are defined; 4) the set of exercises for teaching skimming reading by means of the project method on the basis of the English press is elaborated, and examples of appropriate exercises are provided. Purpose. The purpose of this research is to study the problem of teaching skimming reading using the project work on the basis of the English press in the 10th form of school with advanced study of foreign languages. Methods. Analysis, synthesis, deduction, induction, modelling, extrapolation; literature analysis, observation, experimental teaching. Results. In the research skimming reading is regarded as the communicative type of reading aimed at getting the first impression of a text to identify its type, subject, and decide whether to read the text in details or not. Skimming reading competence is viewed here as the formation built of specific speech skills that are: 1) to orient in the compositional and semantic structure of the text, 2) to use title / subtitle / entry / illustration to make predictions about a topic of a text, 3) to identify the most general information that relates text with a certain thematic area, 4) to compress textual information, highlighting important points and ignoring minor ones to identify the issues considered and main ideas of an article, 5) to evaluate the prospects of using information of an article for achieving communicative goals. To enhance the efficiency of teaching skimming reading in the 10th form of school with advanced study of foreign languages, it is reasonable to use the project work for on the textual material of the English press, as it provides learners with intrinsically motivating activities and the opportunity to use English for authentic purposes. In the article the following stages of teaching skimming reading by means of the project work on the basis of the English press in the 10th form of school with advanced study of foreign languages are defined: 1) prereading stage, 2) while-reading stage, 3) postreading stage. The aims of each stage correspond to the subgroups of the set of exercises for developing the skimming reading competence using the project method on the basis of the English press (the 10th form of school with advanced study of foreign languages): 1) exercises for introducing the topic and project activities; 2) exercises for developing structural skills; 3) exercises for developing the skills of understanding headlines; 4) exercises for coping with lexical and grammatical difficulties of reading an authentic article; 5) exercises for developing skills of using structural elements of an article to make predictions about its content; 6) exercises for developing skills of identifying an article’s main issues and evaluating the prospects of using information given; 7) exercises for developing skills of semantic text processing; 8) exercises for teaching oral and written speech using the content of the article processed." @default.
