- W2912137721 abstract "Children are the key players in transition to school. This chapter discusses children’s perspectives, expectations and experiences of starting primary school. In the Nordic countries, almost all children have attended preschool for several years before they start primary school, and in Iceland, preschool is the first level of schooling. Although preschool attendance is nearly universal today, there is a considerable difference between preschool and primary school levels. They have very different histories, traditions and organisation, and the laws and national curricula governing them have different emphases. This chapter builds on four studies conducted with children in preschools and primary schools in Iceland. Analysis of the findings conveyed several themes: the children saw changes in their status and responsibilities, in the teaching methods and in the level of democracy; they had been prepared for these changes in preschool and by society; they defined learning that took place in primary school but not in preschool; and they missed other children and time to play in preschool." @default.
