- W2912162507 abstract "Prior to implementing insulating materials in high voltage direct current (HVDC) applications, the knowledge on conductivity of these materials is of high importance in order to evaluate the associated material stresses and the related field distribution. Conductivity determination utilizing guard ring electrodes is subjected to field distortion (fringing) due to the gap between the measurement and guard electrode. Therefore, the effective electrode area needs to be considered for accurate conductivity determination. The effective electrode area differs significantly from the geometrical electrode area and is influenced by the overall electrode design and the scope of investigation (plaque samples / submerged electrodes). In order to derive and analyse influences on the effective electrode area, a verified simulation framework, which is implemented in COMSOL multi-physics, is used. Besides the framework presentation, several case studies related to electrode height and parasitic currents through the test specimen surroundings are presented. Furthermore, it is concluded that additional shielding measures offer benefits. Model-based determination of the fringing factor for shielded and submerged electrode setups is well in accordance with presented analytical calculations and enables significant accuracy enhancements compared to normative suggested fringing factor correction." @default.
