- W2912166810 abstract "Poxviruses are large, complex, DNA viruses whose various members infect animals and insects. The term pox derives from the English pocks, referring to blister-like skin lesions that are the hallmark of smallpox and other poxvirus infections. Poxviruses have base-paired DNA genomes that range in size from 130 to 300 kbp. They encode all enzymes needed for RNA and DNA synthesis and replicate in the cell cytoplasm. Poxviruses are also masters of evading innate and adaptive immune responses, using a variety of proteins encoded by their large genomes. Virions are enveloped, their surfaces covered with proteinaceous ridges or tubules. Viewed in thin section, a central tubular region (often dumbbell-shaped) contains DNA. Electron dense lateral bodies are positioned in the curves of the core and are surrounded by the lipid envelope." @default.
