- W2912178192 abstract "Publisher SummaryThis chapter discusses the elementary properties of matrices, some applications of matrices, and the relation of matrices to determinants. Matrix theory is usually concerned with a finite arrangement of elements. So widespread are matrices now that they must be regarded as fundamental in any study of higher mathematics. Matrices were first developed in 1858 by Cayley (1821–95, English) who thought of a matrix as a “convenient mode of expression of the equations x' = ax+by, y' = cx+dy.” Since Cayley's time, matrices have become an indispensable tool not only in mathematics but also in the physical and social sciences. Their ramifications extend far beyond the original purpose for which they were invented. Matrices have very wide applicability. Whenever a state of stress of strain exists, for example, in engineering construction, matrices may be used to specify the process. In aerodynamics, imagine a small square of smoke pulled into the air-stream: as it moves along, this square will change shape and this shape will reveal what is happening in the air stream. So matrices may be employed. Quite apart from their implications for engineering and science generally, matrices occupy a central position in modern mathematics where they are a valuable tool in, say, projective geometry, group theory, mechanics, relativity, and quantum mechanics." @default.
