- W2912200926 abstract "This study examines how a populist religious leader,Alexander Campbell, altered the economic value system of religiousmaterial production in the early United States and, subsequently, the long-term value structure of religious economic systemsgenerally. As religious publishing societies in the earlynineteenth century were pioneering the not-for-profit corporationand as many popular itinerants manufactured religious spectaclesaround the country, Campbell combined the promotional methods ofrevivalism and the business practices of religious printers, with aconspicuously pugilistic tone to simultaneously build religious andbusiness empires. He was a religious entrepreneur who capitalizedon the opportunities of American revivalism for personal andreligious gain. His opponents attacked his theology and his wealthas signs of his obvious error but few were prepared for the vigorof his answer. He invited conflict and challenged prominentopponents to grow his celebrity and extend his brand into newmarkets. He argued that his labor as a printer was deserving ofcompensation and that, unlike his “venal” clerical opponents, heoffered his services as a preacher for free. As Americans in theearly national period increasingly felt obligated to find the“right kind of Christianity,” Campbell packaged and sold acompelling product. In the decades that followed his first debatein 1820, he built a religious following that by 1850 numbered wellover 100,000 followers. This dissertation considers the importanceof marketing, promotion, investment capital, distribution networks, property law, print culture, and ideology, to the success of agiven religious prescription in the nineteenth century Americanmarketplace of religion. Campbell’s success reveals importantsocial, political, and economic structures in the nineteenthcentury trans-Appalachian west. It also illuminates a form ofreligious entrepreneurialism that continues to be important toAmerican Christianity." @default.
