- W2912220237 abstract "Human Threading is a three step process which leverages neuroscience in an effort to create novel and efficient information technologies. Through brain scans and simultaneous measurements of the central nervous system, human and computer interaction is analyzed to quantify cognitive load. With a central focus on creating efficiency in IT, this cognitive load data provides a radical framework for future technological development. Human Threading is a divergent initiative combining observations in neuroscience with design science theory and multiple engineering disciplines. Based on the human physiological reaction to an IT artifact, a new technology is inspired. Using design science theory, a testable prototype is developed and examined based on these neurophysiologic measurements. This dissertation provides a framework to produce efficient technologies. Two Human Threading experiments were conducted using this framework as a basis for proof of concept and for prototyping. My first experiment provides a comparison of efficiency between two email systems in a corporate environment. My Human Threading (voice-based) email system showed a company savings of 717 hours or about $20,000 per employee each year compared to Microsoft Outlook. The second experiment used a residential Verizon FiOS graphical user interface guide for channel surfing. It compared a standard handheld remote control against glasses which allowed eye control and voice command. This second experiment also showed lower amounts of cognitive load and time to complete with eye and voice control as opposed to a standard handheld remote. This dissertation will advance human efficiency within information systems, individuals, and science in the following ways. First, efficient technologies will save companies time and money. Human Threading aligns itself with people first rather than computer functionality, allowing for more intuitive artifacts and less user training. Finally, this subject matter will advance science in many different areas of exploration, such as human multitasking, technological development, efficient ergonomics, physiological tendencies, and neuroscience." @default.
