- W2912253420 abstract "Dear Readers, As we go into the 20th year of Macromolecular Materials and Engineering, I would like to take a look back, with you, into the journal's long and rich history. An interesting exercise, especially for someone like myself, who took over responsibility for the journal only 2 years ago. Macromolecular Materials and Engineering did not come from nothing; the journal's predecessor, Die Angewandte Makromolekulare Chemie (AMC), was launched in 1967. When the polymer program of the publishing house Hüthig & Wepf was acquired by Wiley-VCH, the family of Macromolecular journals was brought to Weinheim. As part of this transition, AMC ended up in the capable hands of Stefan Spiegel and was soon relaunched (you can find the first cover in Figure ). Under its new name, Macromolecular Materials and Engineering (MME), the journal grew into the multidisciplinary platform you know and love today. The remarkable topical foresight in MME is probably best illustrated by our most cited paper of all time. In 2000, A. K. Mohanty, M. Misra, and G. Hinrichsen published their paper “Biofibres, Biodegradable Polymers and Biocomposites: An Overview” (Macromol. Mater. Eng. 2000, 276/277, 1–24) which has accumulated 1499 citations in Web of Science and even in 2018, remains among the top 10 downloaded papers in the journal. But not only has the last 20 years been a success story, in the past year we received 20% more submissions than in 2017 and published 14% more manuscripts. Table 1 features our top five downloaded papers in 2018 and shows the broad range of topics that we publish. From bandages and hydrogels to 3D printing, strain sensors and microfluidics, Macromolecular Materials and Engineering covers a diverse range of applications of polymers as well as fabrication of polymeric materials. In Figure 2, we present three of the most beautiful covers we had last year (quite an improvement compared to the first issue, I hope you will agree). Furthermore, the present issue of Macromolecular Materials and Engineering is filled with fantastic content by our board members and friends of the journal, including work on hyphenated rheology techniques by Manfred Wilhelm; a review on polymer actuators by Seema Agarwal; a review on functionalized graphene nanofillers by Rolf Mülhaupt; a review on conductivity in nanocomposites by Suprakas Sinha Ray; and much more. I would like to thank you—our readers, authors, reviewers, and board members—for your continued support over the last 20 years, and I am looking forward to the next two decades.
