• W2912286548 abstract "Introduction: Smoking cessation (SC) is an important quality measure for Crohn's disease (CD) treatment, but effective methods of SC for this population have not been clearly defined. SC programs with the highest abstinence rates at 6 months combine continual intervention with behavioral and medical support. This study assessed the effect of interactive media on patients' behavioral motivation to quit and compliance to a SC program. We hypothesized that interactive media would provide motivational benefit over passive media. Methods: We utilized the Clinical Data Research Warehouse at the University of Chicago to identify CD patients who were CS. Additional patients were recruited through Asheville Gastroenterology (North Carolina). Patients were randomized 1:1 to view a web-based interactive multimedia SC program created with input from smokers, a behavioral scientist, and a medical advisory team or the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) “Quitting Smoking Fact Sheet.” An initial survey assessed demographics, smoking characteristics, and motivation to quit. Motivation to quit was assessed again at 1 week and 6 months using a descending ladder of statements representative of motivational sentiment (valued 10 to 1, 10 being “I have quit smoking and I will never smoke again”). Data were collected in Redcap and analyzed using Pandas, SciPy, and rpy2 Python libraries. Two-way repeated measures ANOVA, Chi-Squared, and Mann-Whitney U tests were utilized when appropriate. Results: 89 patients were recruited, 57 completed the initial survey, and 34 followed up at one week. At six months, 17 responded. Other than concern for the harms of smoking, there were no significant differences in demographics or smoking characteristics (Tables 1,2). A two-way ANOVA examining mean motivational change and media type did not reveal any significant difference. Median motivational change in interactive and passive arms at one week were 0 and 1 points, respectively (U=150.0, ninteractive=npassive=16, p=.22). At 6 months, the median difference in interactive and passive arms were 0.5 and 0 points (U=31.5, ninteractive =8;npassive=7, p=.72).Table: Smoking Characteristics.Conclusion: We observed no significant difference between interactive or passive modules on motivation to quit smoking in CD patients. Patients viewed assigned modules once during our study which may not have been sufficient to impart persistent motivational differences in short intervals of time.
