- W2912344541 abstract "Sustainable groundwater resources management in arid areas requires early and immediate action to prevent further negative impacts on these resources. The persistent decline in the quantity and quality of groundwater in many countries has been leading to severe challenges in the present and future. In this research, the factors affecting groundwater salinization in a coastal aquifer were evaluated using data-mining models including the generalized additive model (GAM), generalized linear model (GLM), and support vector machine (SVM) in northern Iran. The modeling of vulnerability to groundwater salinization (VGS) was carried out by training (70%) and validation (30%) of the model using a qualitative well sampling dataset. A cutoff value for qualitative well sampling network was defined using the Wilcox method [electrical conductivity (EC)≥2250 µmho/cm] to identify the vulnerable zones. The hydrogeologic factors related to the groundwater salinity mechanism were used in order to prepare the models for VGS. The results showed that GLM, GAM, and SVM models have acceptable performance in the modeling of VGS. For this, a statistical test based on the receiver operating characteristics (ROCs) criterion was applied in the validation step. The calculated ROCs for GLM, GAM, and SVM models were 0.680, 0.659, and 0.667 indicating that 35.9%, 38.6%, and 27.4% of the studied aquifer were at high and very high risk of salinization with an EC of 6950 and 10,999 µmho/cm, respectively. The findings of VGS in different zones of the studied aquifer suggested that an immediate action is required to prevent further salinization in the groundwater system." @default.
