Modern microscopes are designed with an infinite image location for the objective lens. There are four different possible ways to illuminate the object in microscopy. They are: epi-illumination, bright field; epi-illumination, dark field; trans-illumination, bright field; and trans-illumination, dark field. In stereoscopic microscopes, the object is observed using two channels of the optical microscope system for each eye. Due to the resulting parallax, this gives the observer a three-dimensional impression of the object. The confocal laser scanning microscope represents a special type of microscope regarding illumination, detection, and image formation.
