- W2912442606 abstract "The potential for using a Database Management System (DBMS) as a framework for a Geographic Information System (GIS) has been recognized but not fully investigated. Previous researchers have shown that current relational database systems lack the modeling power and extensibility needed for complex objects and operations used in geographic applications. New DBMSs with object-oriented modeling and extensibility form a promising tool to fulfill needed requirements for building a GIS. In addition, new object-centered GIS models, such as the DLG-E model, have been proposed. In this work, the constructs of an Object-Oriented Database Management System (OODBMS) are illustrated for an implementation of an object-centered GIS. The benefits of object-oriented modeling compared to relational modeling are shown in a translation of an application from a relational-type model to a feature-based OODBMS model. Furthermore, additional OODBMS features and extensibility facilitating GISs are described. Differences in logical and physical modeling in two OODBMSs are analyzed regarding their influence on conceptual modeling for an application. Potential advantages of object-oriented modeling and pointer-based joins for query processing are described. Modeling relationships in next generation DBMSs is studied with regard to the need to integrate modeling alternatives, loading and establishing relationships, and query processing. Ideas are formulated for methods to load and establish pointers such as executing queries or functions. Taking advantage of OODBMS extensibility, alternative data structures are introduced as a more complex and useful method to model and store relationships and as a solution for the lack of externalization of relationships in object-oriented models. As the result of this investigation, enhancements to GIS databases and models are proposed based on the capabilities of next generation database systems. This includes the ease of adding more information within feature objects and more relationships between objects. Also, more logical groupings, including multi-leveled hierarchies, can be directly stored for increased data organization and information. An object-oriented design for thematic vector maps is also presented. Suggestions are made for new OODBMS features for GISs. The enhancements to databases and models will result in more comprehensive and useful GISs." @default.
