- W2912448263 abstract "The purpose of this study was to investigate the current instructional practices and pedagogy of teachers who were given purposefully designed technology preparation in an Alternative Teacher Education (ATE) program. Veen's (1995) work on school and teacher level factors that contribute to computer use in schools served as the conceptual framework for this study. The research questions focused on the pedagogy and practice of teachers in their fourth year of teaching who were intentionally trained to use technology in their preservice teacher education program. A case study approach was used and four elementary teachers who participated in the technology enriched preservice program were invited to participate in the study. Qualitative techniques were employed to select participants, collect and analyze data, and represent salient themes that emerged from the data as a result of attention to issues of trustworthiness and rigor. Data were collected using in-depth interviews, observations and document analysis and analyzed using a constant comparative method. Many factors impacted on these four teachers' use of technology; some were external or within the school and district context and others were internal or specific to the teachers' beliefs and experiences. External factors played an important role in the practice and, to some extent, the pedagogy of the four teacher participants. The two most salient themes that emerged related to external factors were the importance of an adequate technology infrastructure and the need for strong school leadership. The ethic of concern the teachers had for their students deeply informed their teaching and their use of technology in their practice. Other teacher level themes that responded to the research questions included: the role of collaboration, satisfaction with the preservice program, professional development related to technology integration, and beliefs about technology's role in schools. The participants profiled in this research report shared many things in common as teachers and as technology-users. Although their stories were in many ways similarly contoured, these four teachers remain unique in identity and in context. Perhaps the most important finding beyond the frame of the conceptual model is the contention that a discussion of teaching with technology can not be separated from a broader discussion of teaching itself. The emergent themes as related to the research questions reflect the finding that teaching with technology is fundamentally and foremost about teaching." @default.
