- W2912449893 abstract "Satellite observations have revolutionized our understanding of the cryosphere and the critical role it plays in shaping Earth's climate system. Polar regions play a critical role in the climate system. Ice reflects sunlight, thus reducing the amount of energy being collected by the Earth, it influences the thermohaline ocean circulation, it warms up the polar atmosphere, and prevents large storms and waves to enter, it also prevents coastal erosion, and Arctic tundra and marine sediments contain large, frozen deposits of methane that will be released to the atmosphere if the ice melts. After a drastic melt in 2016, Arctic sea ice has reduced to its second lowest level in recorded history, according to the National Snow and Ice Data Center. Initially, satellite remote sensing of polar regions was limited to polar-orbiting visible and near-infrared satellite imagery, but these regions are covered by clouds most of the time. Today, a suite of sensors including radar scatterometers, microwave radiometers, and LIDAR, on board ICESat, CryoSat, QuikSCAT, SMOS, SSMI/S, AMSR-2, and TDS-1, are amenable to perform ice thickness, ice cover, first-year ice and multiyear ice classification, ice motion, drifts. In this chapter, we briefly revise the different techniques and how they are applied to the observation of these challenging regions." @default.
