ABSTRACT The objective of the study was to verify the effect of strength training with three and five times weekly sessions on the percentage of fat in sedentary women after eight weeks of training. Participants were 60 sedentary women, at least 6 months of age and healthy, randomly divided into two experimental groups, separated by a weekly frequency of three times (GT3: n = 20, age = 31.94 ± 8.99, height = 158.50 ± 7.30, weight = 63.10 ± 9.94) and 5 times (GT5: n = 20, age = 33.21 ± 7.70, height = 158.42 ± 5.45, weight = 66, 99 ± 10.71), in addition to the control group (GC: n = 20, age = 30.31 ± 9.01, height = 160.02 ± 6.29, weight = 62.40 ± 8.31). The variables, anthropometric, body composition and maximal strength were performed at the beginning and at the end of the study. The training program consisted of multi-articular exercises, with intensity of 60% of a maximal repetition (1RM), series of 15-20 in the first two weeks of training and of 10-15 in the other weeks and interval of 60 seconds between the series. Significant differences (p <0.05) were found after 8 weeks of strength training only in GT5 for fat percentage, while GT3 and CG groups did not present significant differences in both fat percentage and body weight. It was concluded, therefore, that 8 weeks of strength training, with weekly frequency of 5 times were enough to reduce body fat, without, however, changing body weight." @default.
