- W2912583197 abstract "INTRODUCTION: Short-term exposure to ambient ozone (O3) is typically associated with poor respiratory health outcomes although the shape of the concentration-response function is unclear. Linearity is often assumed but previous research is limited by sparse data at low and high O3 levels. METHODS: We examined concentration-response curves between daily O3 and emergency department (ED) visits for respiratory disease in five US cities over a recent multi-year period that encompassed a range of O3 levels. Population-weighted average 8-hr maximum O3 concentrations were estimated in each city from available monitoring data fused with outputs from the Community Multiscale Air Quality model. Poisson regression was used to estimate associations of respiratory ED visits and 3-day moving average (of lag days 0-2) O3 levels in each city, controlling for long-term trends and meteorology. We considered linear, linear-threshold, and categorical O3 models. Thresholds for each city were determined as the O3 level that maximized the log-likelihood. Categorical models classified O3 into five groups (<25, 25-35, 36-45, 46-60, and >60 ppb). Akaike Information Criteria was obtained for each model and used to determine model fit. RESULTS: Nearly 20% of days (out of 1094-2555 total days per city) were low O3 days (<25 ppb) and 11% were high O3 days (>60 ppb). In linear models, O3 was significantly and positively associated with respiratory ED visits in each city with rate ratios of 1.02-1.05 per 25 ppb. Although there was some suggestion of O3 thresholds (of 24-26 ppb) in three of the cities, linear models fit as well as or better than threshold and categorical models. Results were similar when restricting analyses to asthma ED visits. Conclusions: We found positive significant linear relationships between O3 and respiratory health across five US cities, including evidence of harmful O3 effects at levels below 25 ppb.
