- W2912631288 abstract "The lung is one of the major interfaces with the environment. The average person breathes in greater than 10 000 l of air per day. Each liter of air can contain in excess of 10 million particulates as well as a wide variety of potentially toxic gases such as ozone, NO2, and SO2. These particulates and gases are distributed over a lung epithelial surface of approximately 100 m2 and with an air–blood barrier as small as 0.1 μm. This chapter discusses the unique roles of the airway and alveolar epithelium in responding to a continual exposure to environmental pollutants, while maintaining normal gas exchange for O2 and CO2. Most inhaled pollutants are appropriately handled with minimal lung injury; however, a wide variety of substances are, on occasion, inhaled at levels that lead to morphological, functional, and/or biochemical injury to the lung epithelium. This chapter reviews the mechanisms and unique distribution of the injurious responses. It also reviews the unique interaction with particulates and nanoparticles with the alveolar surface that influence uptake and risk of injury. In vitro, animal and human toxicological responses to inhalation of both gases and particles are compared." @default.
