Graphene oxide (GO) and its derivatives hold vast potential in biomedical applications because of their near-infrared (NIR) absorbance, large specific surface area, and abundant functional groups. However, their use is hampered by their insufficient biostability and biocompatibility; an effective solution to these issues is surface modification. Therefore, research has focused on bioinspired GO surface modifications that improve the biostability and biofunctions of the resulting compounds. Here, we highlight recent advances in the development of surface modifications to enable multidrug shielding, site-specific trafficking, and favorable biostability. Moreover, we provide a comprehensive overview of recent GO-derived nanomaterial applications in biomedical fields, including chemotherapeutic and biological drug delivery, phototherapy, biosensing, bioimaging, and antibiosis. We discuss the bioinspired surface modifications of nanographene oxide for biocompatibility and biostability concerns, and summarize the biomedical applications of graphene oxide derivatives." @default.
