- W2912809915 abstract "This chapter describes the various sources (with an emphasis on microbial sources), classification, mechanisms of inhibition, purification, characterization, and applications of natural protease inhibitors (PIs). Proteolytic enzymes are the largest functional group of proteins (there are more than 560) that perform crucial functions in all plants, animals, and microbes, as well as archaea; and they constitute 1%–5% of the gene content. Protein PIs are a class of low-molecular-weight polypeptides that act as natural antagonists of proteolytic enzymes and are responsible, either directly or indirectly, for various functions, including cell growth, apoptosis, protein turnover, and cell migration, in all life forms. PIs are commonly grouped into six types according to the mechanistic class of proteases they inhibit. Microbes represent an inexpensive source of PIs that have (1) extensive structural versatility, (2) specific broad inhibitory profiles, (3) resistance to proteolytic cleavage, (4) stability in edaphic conditions, and (5) various patterns of inhibition. These attributes make them suitable for an array of applications in medicine, agriculture, and biotechnology." @default.
