- W2912861986 abstract "Weakening of the fetal membranes leading to preterm premature rupture of the membranes can occur for several reasons, but local inflammation and infection are evident in many cases, particularly when membrane rupture occurs remote from term. After preterm premature rupture of the membranes, delivery may be required or inevitable because of advanced labor, intrauterine infection, placental abruption, or because of abnormal fetal testing. For those amenable to continuation of pregnancy, the decision to actively pursue delivery or to conservatively manage the pregnancy hinges on knowledge of gestational age, and an understanding of the expected clinical course, the risks of intrauterine infection, abruptio placentae, and fetal distress/death, as well as the neonatal risks with immediate or delayed delivery. In this chapter we provide guidance to assist in the management of these difficult patients." @default.
