- W2912885126 abstract "Gastric acid facilitates digestion of protein and absorption of iron, calcium, and vitamin B12. It also prevents bacterial overgrowth, enteric infection and, possibly, pneumonia, spontaneous bacterial peritonitis, and food allergy. Too much acid, however, may overwhelm the mucosal defense and may cause tissue damage. The two functional regions of the stomach are the oxyntic and pyloric areas. The hallmark of oxyntic mucosa is the acid-secreting parietal cell, and the dominant endocrine cell is the histamine-secreting enterochromaffin-like cell. The hallmark of pyloric mucosa is the gastrin-secreting G cell. Somatostatin-secreting D cells, present in both regions, tonically restrain acid secretion directly as well as indirectly by inhibiting histamine and gastrin secretion. A basic understanding of functional anatomy is necessary to properly understand the acid secretory response to a meal, the proper use of antisecretory drugs, and the management of Helicobacter pylori infection, Zollinger–Ellison syndrome, and gastric carcinoid." @default.
