- W2912942387 abstract "Numerous differences in drug pharmacokinetics exist between horses and other species. These differences, particularly in oral drug absorption capability, can result in therapeutic failure as well as an increased risk for adverse events. This chapter discusses the factors contributing to these differences with particular reference to differences between horses and humans. The use of compounded products in equine medicine is a common practice due to the lack of US Food and Drug Administration-approved drugs for horses and the dearth of convenient, palatable formulations. Drug distribution, metabolism, and elimination of many drugs differ in horses compared to humans and other companion animals. The chapter provides examples of drugs commonly dispensed for use in horses by category. Horses are particularly sensitive to adverse gastrointestinal effects of drugs, especially antibiotics. Other adverse drug effects unique to horses include laminitis and right dorsal colitis." @default.
