- W2913234675 abstract "This chapter describes the tests that have been used to identify infants with neonatal sepsis. It is effectively impossible to practise good neonatal intensive care without reliable microbiology. If clinicians cannot or do not rely on microbiology results they will have insufficient guidance on antimicrobial use, inevitably leading to poor prescribing practices. Various haematologic, biochemical and microbiologic tests have been studied or are being developed in order to identify rapidly infants with neonatal sepsis and also to identify non-infected infants. Cultures suffer from some delay in diagnosis. New molecular assays can potentially give results within 12 hours. Several novel tests are not yet ready for general clinical use, but show promise for early detection of infected infants. The most promising are new combinations of biomarkers identified by proteomics-based research and the use of gene expression profiling to detect infected infants." @default.
