- W2913272611 abstract "In November 2014, Pope Francis addressed the World Congress of Accountants in Rome and called on the profession to go beyond accomplishing its duty with competence and wisdom. The pope challenged the profession to find creative solutions to social problems such as unemployment so as to give all people the opportunity to achieve self-development. The study draws upon the pope’s speech for lessons on how the profession can transform its ethical self-image from a passive enabler of other business functions to a visionary counselor of creative win/win solutions for problems that arise from tensions between profits and social solidarity. Such a transformation can come about when professionals allow their spiritual resources to inform their work practices. Recent studies show that workers and companies with a spiritual orientation perform better than their peers. One particular benefit of spirituality is that it encourages creativity. In addition to the spiritual lessons from the pope’s speech, the author also shares his experience in discussing the pope’s speech in an accounting class. The study concludes with examples of how accountants could propose creative solutions and perspectives to tensions between corporate profits and social solidarity." @default.
