- W2913463405 abstract "Background Communication is recognised as a key component for ensuring patient safety, particularly in emergency medical team interactions. It is vital that the team leader has good communication skills. Simulation is an effective means of training health professionals, but communication skills literature in this area is lacking in evidence of best practice, rendering research important. Our previous research (Tsuchiya et al., 2017) identified the need to investigate non-verbal features of communication, particularly eye-gaze, together with the use of language. We are developing an innovative technique for multimodal analysis of team interactions using eye-tracking glasses. Summary of work This preliminary study focuses on a team leader’s direction of gaze and how this affects team performance in emergency scenarios. Using information from eye-tracking glasses and a head-mounted GoPro, this study is able to (1) identify what the leader sees and when, and (2) investigate their direction of gaze during team interactions. We plan to assess the feasibility of this methodology for recording further in situ team interactions. Two scripted trauma scenarios were performed, using an SP (60-year-old male) and a mannequin (30-year-old male) respectively. Two medical teams comprising senior or junior ED team leaders (wearing eye-tracker glasses), two foundation doctors, two nurses and a clinical support worker took part. A total of 4 scenarios were recorded and analysed for the study. Summary of results Projection, the phenomenon in which ‘an individual action or part of it foreshadows another’ (Auer, 2005, p. 8), was observed in the leader’s gaze. For instance, a team leader looked at an ED booklet on a table 8 secs after entering the simulation room, and 5 mins later he looked at it again and asked everyone to sign in. The members’ action of signing in led to the closure of his projection. Thus, the leader’s projection was developed over a period of time and realised with the involvement of the other participants. Discussion and Conclusions Although still in a preliminary stage, the analysis of a leader’s gaze, correlated with utterances, visualises the leader’s projection action and its trajectory. The skill to project and negotiate a course of action involving others seems likely to be crucial for a leader of an emergency care team. Recommendations This methodology can be applied to further research with a larger dataset to compare the projection skills of senior and novice team leaders, potentially offering a useful benchmark for the assessment of leaders’ communication skills.
