- W2913659972 abstract "This chapter attempts to define the basic principles that drive and guide these shared interactions between chemicals and living systems with this shared definition and the many overlaps among the chemicals and living systems of interest between pharmacology and toxicology. Pharmacologists define two types of drugs at the simplest level: drugs that activate the receptor and initiate a cellular response are termed “agonists,” and drugs that bind to the receptor but do not induce receptor activation are termed “antagonists”. The sites to which chemicals attach to mediate the interactions that lead to effects on living systems are referred to as receptors, indicating that these are the biomolecules that receive the chemical information from the molecules with which they attach. The chapter presents new insights from elegant atomic level structural and dynamics studies of how these chemical attachments occur and how they, in turn, mediate their effects on living systems. Receptors are protein molecules that exhibit selective and strong binding interactions." @default.
