- W2913824768 abstract "Abstract The bark of the purple willow (Salix purpurea L.) is one of the few plant materials with multiple medicinal properties, which have been used for treating rheumatic diseases. Willow bark contains many pharmacologically active compounds, including salicylic glycosides (SG), flavonoids, and other polyphenols, which have even more complex pharmacological action and fewer side effects than synthetic acetylsalicylic acid (ASA). The key obstacle to more extensive use of S. purpurea bark for therapeutic purposes is that the bark of various willow species is often regarded as identical. It should be stressed that the bark of different willow species or even genotypes is never homogeneous. Only controlled cultivation of selected willow varieties could offer a safe and stable source of high-quality bark for medicinal uses. As a result, the drug production process and analyses of the drugs’ therapeutic properties and toxicity will apply to specific components, which will facilitate standardization and, above all, correct evaluations of their efficacy." @default.
