It aims to initiate a discussion based on the academic framework, with a view to developing an outlook of Hong Kong port. Professor C. P. Lau has reviewed how Hong Kong transformed from a fishing village into a busy trade port and is now playing a pivotal role in providing transport, trade and financial services. Hong Kong is one example among many ports, and similar successes have been repeated within a shorter period. Some of these are now competitors of Hong Kong. High operating costs were impairing the highly efficient logistics industry. The private operators tightly controlled their service charges.
