- W2913955031 abstract "Grounded theory (GT) research method discussed in this chapter was developed by Barney Glaser and Anselm Strauss (1967). Rather than reviewing previous literature, developing a hypothesis and then testing it, the GT process starts with data collection, gradually building up categories and forming a theory, before linking that theory to previous literature at the end. GT does not set out test an existing pre-defined hypothesis, but instead has the aim of developing new theory. The term GT itself derives from the notion that theory should be grounded firmly in data. Critics have argued this is misleading as it is a method, not a theory. Charmaz (2006) uses grounded theory method which produces grounded theories. I prefer the terms used by Hammersley and Atkinson (2005): ground theorizing to refer to using this method, and grounded theory to refer to the product of the activity; that is, grounded theorizing produces grounded theory. In any case, this method abbreviates to GT for short." @default.
