- W2914096475 abstract "Welcome to Visualization '91, the second annual IEEE conference on held October 22-25, 1991 in San Diego, Califomia. This conference series is inspired and sponsored by the IEEE Technical Committee on Computer Graphics in cooperation with ACM/SIGGRAPH.The role of visualization, in science, engineering, medicine, and business, has been expounded in many journals and articles. Some recent references include the 1987 NSF Report on Visualization in Scientific Computing, the August 1989 Computer special issue on scientific visualization, the Proceedings of Visualization '90, and the May 1991 IEEE Computer Graphics and Applications special issue on visualization which featured updates from several of the best papers from the 1990 Visualization conference. The Visualization conference series is concerned with all aspects of visualization, with a focus on interdisciplinary techniques. It explores how visualization is being used to extract knowledge from data acquired in a variety of applications. The conference allows a dialogue to occur between the developers of visualization methods and visualization usem. These proceedings publish the 41 N1 papers presented during the three days of the technical paper program at the conference. We feel that this program represents the state of the art in visualization research and applications. The preeminence of the technical paper program stems from the large number of very highquality papers submitted. The full papers and, where submitted, the accompanying videotapes, were refereed by at least three reviewers, generally including two members of the program committee. Every effort was made to guarantee that the paper and the expertise of the reviewer were well-matched. Based on the reviewers' rankings, and, in some cases, on additional reviews and lengthy conference calls, the papers co-chairs were convinced that the best selections to meet the conference goals were made. The reviewers provided detailed comments and corrections, and met the very strict deadlines required by the review/publication process. Along with the authors, we owe the reviewers credit for the proceedings. The Visualization '91 conference proceedings also include a section of papers from the case studies program of the conference. These papers deal with interdisciplinary issues of visualization, and demonstrate important applications, with emphasis on the transition from theory to practice. The case studies were selected from submitted proposals by Paul Hazan and Jeff Posdammer. This unique case studies program is an integral and vital part of the conference, and the high quality of this portion of the program is a direct result of the dedication of the case studies co-chairs.The third section of the proceedings is the panels program, which includes summaries and position papers by the panels chairs and panelists. The panels cover many diverse issues in visualization, including techniques, tools, perception, and interaction. It took a great deal of work by panels co-chairs Dan Bergeron and Nahum Gershon and the slated panelists to make this program possible. The keynote speaker at the opening session is Dr. Larry Smarr, Director of the National Center for Supcrcomputer Applications. Besides playing a major role in developing national support for supercomputing and visualization, Dr. Smarr is an internationally recognized astrophysicist. He represents the interdisciplinary nature of visualization that the Visualization conference series endeavors to address. A keynote panel has also been arranged. It will be the Edwin H. Land Memorial Panel From Perception to Visualization, commemorating the work of Edwin H. Land, whose recent passing saddened us all. 'The capstone address to close the conference will be given by Dr. Michael Marmor, Chairman of the Dept. of Gpthalmology at Stanford University. Dr. Marmor has pioneered the exploration of the relationship between art and visual physiology. These outstanding keynote events are the work of many members of the conference committee, but Arie Kaufman and Nahum Gershon merit special mention. The final portion of the proceedings is the color section, in which the color plates for the papers am collated. Black and white versions are contained in the papers. It is unusual for a conference this size to produce color at no charge to the authors, but it is essential for this topic area. A videotape is also being prepared of submitted animations. Welcome to Visualization '91, the second annual IEEE conference on held October 22-25, 1991 in San Diego, Califomia.
