- W2914136442 abstract "Genetic and epigenetic alterations impact human health and disease. Genetic information encoded in the DNA is faithfully passed on to daughter cells upon mitotic cell division and to the next generation through the germline. There are more than 200 different cell types in the human body each with its own distinct phenotype that is always maintained and also retained upon subsequent cell division. Epigenetic control is responsible for the translation of genotype to phenotype by establishing and maintaining specialized gene expression programs through changes in chromatin without altering the underlying DNA sequence. Epigenetic control also elicits allele-specific gene expression that is associated with the process of imprinting and X-chromosome inactivation. This chapter presents a general background of epigenetic control mechanisms and the contribution of epigenetics to human disease." @default.
