- W2914243775 abstract "In contrast to the capture methods described in previous chapters, which aim to produce a CO2 stream that can then be stored, mineral carbonation, which accelerates the natural weathering of igneous rocks, aims to store carbon in the form of potentially useful products that are chemically stable and relatively benign. The chemistry of mineral carbonation, which involves the reaction of CO2 with minerals containing oxides or silicates of magnesium, iron, and calcium to form stable carbonates, is first discussed including some biogeochemical options for mineralizing CO2. The various carbonation routes are then described, including direct routes in which CO2 is reacted directly with the mineral and indirect routes in which the reactive metal is first extracted from the mineral and then carbonated. The technology development status is then summarized, including feedstock selection, pre-treatment, and reaction optimization. Potential applications in the power generation and steel industry are described as well as two ongoing in situ mineral carbonation trials where CO2 is injected directly into basalt rocks." @default.
