- W2914447780 abstract "Chronic kidney disease is considered the most common renal disease occurring in dogs and cats. This chapter discusses pharmacotherapy of common canine and feline renal diseases. Lower urinary tract diseases occur commonly in dogs and cats, and many mirror what occurs in human beings. There are several pathophysiological processes that result in renal disease and, using the DAMNIT scheme, these are: degenerative, anatomic, metabolic, neoplastic, infectious/inflammatory/immune-mediated, and toxic/traumatic. The kidneys are susceptible to hypoxia and necrosis from hypoperfusion/hypovolemia due to the fact that approximately 20% of cardiac output circulates through the kidneys. Evaluation of veterinary patients with renal disease is directed at determining the cause and metabolic derangements that occur in association with renal disease. Nutritional therapy is a mainstay of managing dogs and cats with renal disease. The chapter also focuses on adverse effects that either are unique to or may be more severe in veterinary patients." @default.
