However, the impact of early life adversity on children has received considerably less attention, with no studies accounting for both need for services and access and utilization of health care. To address this, the present study used data from the 2011–2012 National Survey of Children’s Health (N = 79,817) to examine the association between individual and cumulative adverse family experiences (AFEs) and use of psychotropic medications among children (ages two through 17). After accounting for sociodemographic characteristics, all adversities were associated with increased odds of using psychotropic medications. After accounting for both need (that is, presence of health conditions) and access and utilization of care, most AFEs were not associated with use of psychotropic medications. However, the impact of parental incarceration and neighborhood violence varied by gender, with deleterious impacts seen for boys and protective effects seen for girls. At a population level, AFEs may promote psychotropic medication use among children. Also, this study suggests that providing health care may be a way to address the increased demand for psychotropic medication among children with a history of adversity." @default.
