- W2914977085 abstract "Steno-occlusive disease of extracranial or intracranial arteries leads to ischemic stroke, a major cause of death and disability. Extracranial artery assessment with cervical duplex ultrasonography and intracranial artery assessment with transcranial Doppler or transcranial color-coded duplex sonography can assist in diagnosing ischemic stroke etiology. Recognition of hemodynamically significant arterial atheromatous stenosis, nonatheromatous arterial lesions, right-to-left shunt, vasospasm in the setting of subarachnoid hemorrhage are well-established clinical uses of neurosonology. Unique clinical applications such as emboli detection and vasomotor reactivity assessment provide complementary information to CT and MRI in the work-up of stroke. Recent breakthroughs in treatment of acute ischemic stroke due to large vessel occlusion open up exciting opportunities for clinical applications of ultrasound as an easily repeatable and relatively inexpensive imaging method of very high temporal resolution which allows real-time and dynamic mapping of the collateral circulation at the bedside with no radiation exposure." @default.
