- W2915027495 abstract "In recent years there has been growing interest in studies of esophageal function. Esophageal manometry is a diagnostic test that measures intraluminal pressures and coordination of pressure activity of the muscles of the esophagus. Manometry is frequently used to assess patients with esophageal symptoms such as dysphagia and non-cardiac chest pain. The test includes a full evaluation of the lower esophageal sphincter, esophageal body, and upper esophageal sphincter. The central piece of equipment is the manometry catheter, which uses spaced pressure sensors to evaluate esophageal contraction. Water-perfused and solid-state catheters may be utilized and the performance of this study is described in this chapter. The catheter records information on multiple values, including contraction strength, duration, propagation, velocity, and coordinated relaxation of associated sphincters in the upper and lower sections of the esophagus. These techniques when used in combination with other diagnostic modalities allow a more complete assessment of the patient with esophageal symptoms, and the delineation of a treatment plan based on motility abnormalities." @default.
